Novell’s recently launched SUSE Linux enterprise is the most interoperable platform for mission-critical computing from the desktop to the data center. With its association with the vSMP
virtualization software, SUSE Linux Enterprise enables users to deploy scalable x86-based SMP systems and improves its applicability to different sized platforms with ease.
The vSMP foundation helps to create a single virtual system by aggregating multiple industry-standard x86 systems for the high performance computing (HPC) market. It supports virtual systems ranging from 4 to 32 processors (128 cores) and up to 4 TB of shared memory. vSMP Foundation provides customers to a cheaper alternative versus the traditional expensive symmetrical multiprocessor and also simplifies cluster deployments by reducing the number of operating systems to one.
The vSMP foundation is perfect for HPC applications because of its large memory and high core count. Effectively, it also provides a unique way to leverage entry level systems to reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

Novell, opines, “SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 is an ideal platform for the business realities of today's heterogeneous environments. SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 fully supports the evolution of customers’ data centers, as they build and manage critical workloads in both physical and virtual environments, and eventually the cloud. The flexibility and reliability of SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 in conjunction with vSMP Foundation allows customers to reduce cost, manage complexity and mitigate risk in these tough economic times.”
Two and a half years after the introduction of Release 10 by Novell, and nearly a year since the last update in the form of Service Pack 2, Novell released Version 11 bringing the SUSE Linux enterprise (SLE) up to date. SUSE Linux Enterprise from Novell is the fastest growing Linux platform available today.
Three major topics converge in SLE 11; interoperability, ubiquity and mission critical computing. It is targeted at the high availability requirements of data centers and other large customers.
SLE 11 additionally offers deep interoperability with the WINDOWS platform regarding areas like systems management, virtualization, document formats and even multimedia. It runs on an extensive array of hardware and has also been optimized for "near-native" performance on a range of hypervisors, including VMware ESX, Microsoft (

With the inclusion of a minimum configuration for the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, called SUSE Linux Enterprise JeOS (Just enough Operating System), independent software vendors can now swiftly and effortlessly deliver virtual appliances.
