With the widespread adoption of open source software, Asterisk (News - Alert)-based solutions have become a staple of the ever-evolving telecommunications space. Businesses of all sizes have recently begun employing these solutions to lower operating costs as well as improve flexibility and reliability.
Xorcom (News - Alert), a leading provider of business telephony hardware solutions, has been at the forefront of the movement toward the open source model. In an effort to continue to push innovation in this field, the privately-held manufacturer recently launched its new and improved complete Asterisk-based VoIP PBX (News - Alert) for small businesses, known as the XR1000.
The stand-alone Asterisk-based PBX system supports a number of combinations of FXS, FXO and BRI ISDN telephony ports. The updated hardware features a Celeron 1.2 GHz processor and is equipped with a 4GB Single Layer Cell (SLC) Disk on Module (DOM) that is designed with an extensive storage capacity.
Xorcom's renovated solution differentiates itself from other Asterisk-based appliances because of its cost-effective nature. The system supports standard Internet upgrades, which means that customers don’t need to spend extra money to keep the hardware at peak performance.
The company improved this version of the solution by enabling each model in the series to support as many as 10 concurrent calls and up to 50 total users, completely independent of what codec is used. The XR1000 also supports 16 analog phone ports and up to 8 BRI IDSN ports.
Sporting an industry standard 19" 1U rack, the XR1000 leaves a very small footprint. It is equipped with an intuitive Web interface and a number of advanced provisioning and maintenance features. These include a service called rapid tunneling, which offers direct support to customers through a secure, firewall-enabled connection.
