Podcast: AstriCon 2010 Set for Asterisk Excitement

June 21, 2010

Those loyal Asterisk (News - Alert) users, developers and followers are highly anticipating AstriCon 2010, set to take place this October. For those who are new to the Asterisk community and want to know more, TMCnet's Erik Linask recently talked with Digium's John Todd (News - Alert) and Steve Sokol in a podcast.

During this podcast, Todd and Sokol talk about the roots of the event, its growth and its attraction for both developers and end users. This podcast is the first of a two part series exploring the exciting world of AstriCon.

What is AstriCon? It is a combination of exhibits, keynotes and talks with people in the open source community who are developing Asterisk within the market. It is an opportunity to come face to face with the Asterisk ecosystem of developers and users. It is a hugely diverse group, including people who write, implement and use Asterisk.

As for the growth of this event, it got started right from day one. The community itself has grown remarkably due to the infectious excitement. The first year the conference was announced, Digium (News - Alert) expected 100-150 people show up and instead, 450 people flooded the hotel. Now close to 800 people attend the show. This growth is attributed to Asterisk. People realize how easy it is to take the Asterisk platform and implement and use.

The event is designed an interesting mix of people. It is a community conference, so you end up with a blend and have to build it to support the different segments. These segments are made up of core development guys; people who have built businesses around Asterisk and are exhibiting at the show; people from government entities; and a number of venture capital people. It is a contingent of people who come to learn.

As for key highlights from last year's event, Todd and Sokol noted that last year was pretty cool. It was Asterisk's 10th birthday and the conference included a birthday party with funny hats.

The show itself concentrated on a number of topics, including key deployments in government; how to make Asterisk more redundant; and a contest for "Fastest Dude to the Dial Tone" to see who could get Asterisk implemented and running the fastest. People swarmed around the contest as if it was the most highly anticipated sporting event; it was very exciting.
