Digium Ships Four Million Asterisk Ports

The history of Asterisk, Digium (News - Alert) and Mark Spencer are well known in telecom circles. Mark is widely praised in some parts of the industry, and in some corners of telecom, he is feared and loathed as the creator of the open source telephony success story that is Asterisk (News - Alert).

Either way you look at it, Asterisk, and Digium have certainly carved out their space in the telecom world. The proof is in the pudding, so to speak, and today’s announcement that Digium has shipped its four-millionth port is a significant indication that Asterisk is growing in popularity, as the market increasingly looks to open source to fulfill their telecom needs.

Digium offers a series of interface cards that are designed to connect a company’s phone system to different types of networks, be they analog or digital. Since 2001, Digium has worked to grow their customer base delivering a plethora of options to satisfy the needs of their constituency.

One of the keys to Digium’s success has been the development of a diverse and growing reseller channel, which currently boasts over 25 distributors and 300 resellers.

The company announced in May that their Digium Authorized Reseller program enjoyed significant growth with the recent addition of the universe of Switchvox (News - Alert) resellers. Digium acquired Switchvox in the fall of 2007.

It was just such a combination — reseller and distributor — that were responsible for deploying port number four million.

Ashley Furniture, a major home furniture brand, purchased the 4 millionth port for their Switchvox SMB system from Digium reseller and online retailer .e4 Technologies, which in turn received the board from Digium distributor NETXUSA (News - Alert).

“We’re a cost-conscious company and we want to purchase products getting the best possible value,” said Brad Hermsen, network services manager at Ashley Furniture Industries. “At the same time, we can’t compromise on quality and features in our phone systems, so we looked to .e4 Technologies when we selected the components of a phone system that really supports the way we do business.”

Michael White, principal of Traverse City, Michigan-based .e4 Technologies, said, “We’re proud of our work for Ashley Furniture because it met their specific business needs. The breadth and quality of the Digium product line help us deliver this kind of top-quality yet cost-effective solution to customers every day.”

Digium is also building their business on the strength of a five-year warranty and the Exceptional Satisfaction Program (ESP), which offers customers who might not be satisfied with the performance of their Digium hardware the option to return it for a full refund.

“In addition to designing hardware for organizations using any variety of types of networks, Digium has focused on creating and delivering the open source telephony industry’s most partner- and customer-friendly programs,” said Danny Windham, CEO of Digium. “The quality of our products is equaled only by the quality of our programs, which together have allowed us to hit the four million port milestone.”
