New Software Development Kit from Zeugma

A provider of open telecommunications solutions for the broadband service provider (BSP) segment, Zeugma (News - Alert), recently launched a software development kit (SDK) for their main product, the Zeugma Services Node (ZSN). The SDK makes full use of the inbuilt scalable and fully federated computer grid in the ZSN to enable service providers and third parties to rapidly and simply evolve tailor made applications that can operate directly within the ZSN. This ability also delivers better visibility and control over network resources which was previously not possible in an enterprise class broadband aggregation, subscriber tracking and edge routing device.

The latest launch allows APIs to deliver applications that can provide direct access to the subscriber tracking, edge routing, traffic management and computing features embedded within the ZSN. Applications can virtually place defining rules into the data plane with the help of these APIs. They can ask deep session inspection (DSI) capability to duplicate or interrupt specific traffic as it moves up to the application for further analysis and processing. Armed with these APIs, applications can also intuitively change traffic management rules of the data plane and set them with minute precision like per-subscriber and per-session. Zeugma’s SmartBoost application has been evolved using the SDK and this is a class in example of the relative simple way by which new service enabling applications can be installed.

In a release, Michael Howard (News - Alert), principal analyst with Infonetics Research, believes that the capability to quickly develop and execute new applications is an important feature for new age telecommunication network operators. Closed development systems are organically not suited to opening up telecommunication networks to innovation from different sources; this is often required for operators to achieve their Telco 2.0 goals. Mr. Howard further asserts that Zeugma is probably the first company to launch an SDK for enterprise grade broadband edge equipment and thus, is ahead of their peers.

Jeff Dillabough, vice president of engineering at Zeugma commented on the company’s latest SDK kit. He said, “The ability to host diverse application sets directly within the Zeugma Services Node sets it apart from other broadband edge network equipment. And the availability of published APIs and a full SDK allows Zeugma, our customers, and even third parties to exploit this capability in novel ways.”

The ZSN can be present with specifications that adapt to 12 compute blades and in turn, deliver a range of high performance and dynamic pool of network based application resources. The Zeugma Open Application Sandbox (OAS) is a special framework that enables any set of applications to operate side by side in a secure environment.  The OAS assures that non-complying applications are identified so that they do not affect the working of other applications or the underlying data plane. The Zeugma SDK has been developed for the OAS.
