Fujitsu on Symbian Foundation Board



Fujitsu Limited announced Thursday that it has been appointed to the Symbian Foundation board of directors.
 
Fujitsu (News - Alert) has joined the league of wireless carriers AT&T, Vodafone, NTT DoCoMo, silicon providers ST Microelectronics NV and Texas Instruments and handset manufacturers Samsung (News - Alert), Sony Ericsson and Nokia as an appointing OEM Member on the Symbian Foundation board.
 
The Symbian Foundation, a non-profit organization that develops and licenses the Open Source Symbian (News - Alert) operating system. Recently, TMCnet reported that the Symbian Foundation has expanded its operations in a new office in Japan.
 
As a foundation appointing OEM Board Member, Fujitsu will support the foundation with both financial commitment and active participation on the four foundation Councils that govern the development of the Symbian Platform. Fujitsu will contribute to the foundation with its expertise in the open source community.
 
The Symbian platform powers the FOMA MOAP(S) phones on the DoCoMo wireless network in Japan. It was Fujitsu that helped develop MOAP(S). The company has several technology firsts to its credit. In 2002, Fujitsu became the first manufacturer to produce a 3G phone for NTT (News - Alert) DoCoMo’s FOMA 3G network, the F2051. In 2003, Fujitsu created the first videophone, the F2102 V and in 2004, it created the first Flash-based Symbian OS phone, the F900i.
“We believe Fujitsu will continue to bring a wealth of experience in making consumer focused multimedia handsets with new user experience to the Symbian Foundation drawing on the successes of the innovative firsts Fujitsu has offered on Symbian,” said Lee Williams, executive director, Symbian Foundation.
 
“Fujitsu is pleased to join and contribute to the Symbian Foundation as a Board member. With 8 years’ experience in developing Symbian OS based mobile phones and commercializing cutting-edge mobile phones for NTT DoCoMo (News - Alert), we will further drive activities to develop the foundation and the Symbian platform,” said Nobuo Ohtani, president, mobile phones unit, Fujitsu Limited.
