Open Source Data Integration is Indeed Enterprise Ready, According to Study

According to a recent report by Talend, a provider of open source data integration solutions, enterprise data integration needs are growing exponentially.

A similar trend has been seen in adoption of open source solutions as well as the interest in these technologies, according to the company. Over a 1000 global respondents have highlighted the validity of open source data integration.

The survey notes that economic changes have resulted in cost controls on IT Managers for both the software and employees. These changes have come during a period when data integration signifies a significant chunk of the enterprise IT budget. Data used in this analysis was collected from over 1000 respondents, majority being in the U.S. (56.5 percent), followed by Europe (35.2 pecent), and rest of the responses (8.3 percent) originating from other parts of the World.

“As companies merge, acquire new applications and build their IT platforms by incorporating disparate applications with legacy systems, information systems are becoming more and more heterogeneous. As a result, data integration tools are now indispensable if enterprise IT departments are to properly manage the flows of data across the information system,” said Yves de Montcheuil, Talend's vice president of Marketing.

Key findings of the research include features like that of operational data integration, either batch or real-time, being a good fit for open source solutions. According to the report, the future trend would be indicative towards Real-time operational data integration projects. Data loading (41.9 percent) and data migration (26.5 percent) are the second and third most popular types of project. Data synchronization (19.1 percent) is also a popular type of project conducted by open source data integration users.

According to the respondents ease of use (59 percent) and performance (53.9 percent) are the two most important criteria of an open source data integration solution. Licensing cost is not an obvious criterion for enterprises turning to open source solutions. Access to the source code comes low on the priority list for firms choosing open source tools. 60.5 percent of respondents needed a scheduling tool which allows consolidation and centralization of their technical processes.38.4 percent of enterprise users wanted an admin tool to manage users and projects, centrally.

Open source data integration solutions have matured to a level, where they are suitable for mission-critical enterprise in diverse areas, according to the survey.
