Sun Microsystems Releases Open Source NetBeans 6.5 IDE Beta



Sun Microsystems (News - Alert), a proponent of open source software technology, this week announced the beta release of its NetBeans 6.5 IDE.
 
The beta release is an update to Milestone 1 release offered for NetBeans 6.5, according to Sun Microsystems. The new version will be officially called “NetBeans 6.5 Milestone 2,” the company said.

NetBeans IDE is an integrated development environment available for Mac, Linux, and Solaris, said Sun Microsystems. The project consists of an open-source IDE and an application platform, which allows developers to create Web, enterprise, desktop and mobile applications using Java platform, C/C++, JavaScript, Ruby, Groovy, and PHP.
 
NetBeans IDE supports all Java editions and it is the ideal tool for software development with PHP, C/C++, Groovy and Grails, Ruby and Rails, Ajax and JavaScript, said Sun Microsystems.
 
The beta version of NetBeans IDE supports Web frameworks such as Hibernate, Spring, and JavaServer Faces. It also supports Glassfish application server and databases, said the company.
 
According to Sun Microsystems, NetBeans IDE offers a diverse selection of third-party plugins. The beta of NetBeans IDE has enhanced features such as an IDE-wide QuickSearch shortcut, a user-friendly interface, and an automatic Compile on Save feature.

Jaspersoft, an open source business intelligence platform for reporting, analysis and data integration tools, this week announced the availability of business intelligence development capabilities for NetBeans, said Sun Microsystems.
 
Jaspersoft offers iReport plug-in for NetBeans. iReport is a graphical report and dashboard tool for JasperReports, an open source reporting product from Jaspersoft. The plug-in had been available in a beta release since December.

Reports are delivered via JasperServer, a report server and business intelligence platform that includes a repository, dashboards, scheduling, and reporting, said the company.

Jaspersoft also announced an upgraded business intelligence support for Sun’s MySQL database, said Sun Microsystems. According to Sun officials, Jasper for MySQL version 3 is an optimized version of the Jaspersoft Business Intelligence Suite that features capabilities of Jaspersoft version 3.
 
Sun Microsystems plans the general release of NetBeans 6.5 on October 2. The company also plans to add Python language support to NetBeans.
