Forschung-Direkt Releases Kiax 2.0 Softphone

Focusing on IT research and development, Forschung-Direkt today announced the debut of the eagerly anticipated version 2.0 of Kiax.

As a multi-platform (Windows, Linux, Mac) softphone, Kiax offers a clean and comfortable user interface that uses Asterisk’s (News - Alert) IAX2 protocol. The entire source code is published under an open source license on SourceForge.net (http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/kiax). This site offers forums where you can ask questions, and give feedback and suggestions to the development team.

Softphones are very popular today among businessmen and private users. When on-the-go, softphones allow them to carry both phone and contacts on their laptop to use voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services all around the world to make cheap or free phone calls.

Kiax has been built for the three most popular platforms, Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. The developers of Kiax wanted to ensure that the release was stable and ready for everyday use. Because of these factors, the development team is working on updating features for the near future. Among these added features are the ability to create multiple accounts, translations and call features like transfers and conferencing. In the long run, Kiax will support the SIP protocol, XMPP chat and video calls.

At the beginning of 2004, the Kiax project was created in an effort to meet the growing demand for a user-friendly, free and open softphone.

Kiax has been downloaded by more than 60,000 users, and is included in many popular and major Linux distributions. Despite its proven stability, the development of the first release had reached a point where further modifications and customization became difficult.

That is when Forschung-Direkt, alongside MIXvoip and encouraged by Corpoinvest, restarted the Kiax development. The Kiax 2.0 release is a complete re-write of the original software and provides a more flexible architecture for future modifications.

One major improvement that was made was the interoperability and integration with third-party applications. Kiax supports a wide range of possibilities to enable click2dial and integration in CRM or Web applications. Several additional tools, such as add-ons for Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Outlook, will be released in the near future.

Forschung-Direkt offers IT research and development. Their motto is: “Nothing is impossible with software. All you need is a great concept, and the time to acquire knowledge and start developing. You can have the freedom to develop your great ideas by using the services of Forschung-Direkt.”

Founded in early 2008, Corpoinvest provides seed investments to support the initial capitalisation or expansion of information technology companies.

MIXvoip is a premier provider of VoIP, fax, asterisk-based, and pbx solutions.
