May 13, 2011

Verizon (News - Alert), operator of the nation’s most advanced 4G network and most reliable 3G network, announced that it has won the 2011 Red Hat and JBoss Innovation Award in the Superior Alternatives category.

According to Red Hat, the Innovation Awards were created to recognize the technological achievements, outstanding use, innovation and extension of Red Hat (News - Alert) and JBoss solutions by Red Hat customers, partners and the open source community.

Brian Delany, lead systems consultant for information technology at Verizon, accepted the award on behalf of the company. As a category winner, Verizon automatically was a finalist for the 2011 JBoss Innovator of the Year Award and the Red Hat Innovator of the Year.

Verizon has supposedly won the innovation award for implementing a new standards-based business process management system for its Integrated Management Platform for Advanced Communications (News - Alert) Technologies (IMPACT) automated platform. This platform provides automation for detection, analysis, and restoration of application performance issues – can identify, troubleshoot and speed resolution of network-impacting events.

The abovementioned business process management system (BPM) is stated to be built on the open source JBoss SOA (service oriented architecture) and it enhanced the performance and added new processes to the IMPACT platform which in turn helped minimize system interruptions.

The JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform is the next-generation ESB and business process automation infrastructure that enables superior business execution, responsiveness, and flexibility in a cost-effective, open platform.

Officials with Verizon commented that this complex project required high levels of assured system availability and customized functionality to meet IMPACT's specific business and technical requirements. The JBoss application provided those capabilities in a highly available environment critical to their network operations. As a result of this new solution, their network operations staff can focus on higher-value activities that translate into better customer service.

Red Hat asserted that innovation is at the very heart of the technology industry, and this year's Red Hat and JBoss Innovation Award honorees are truly taking innovation to the next level. Verizon offers a fantastic example of how customers are using JBoss technology not only for their mission-critical applications, but also to improve their business performance.
