NEC CORPORATION: NEC Selected by UQ Communications as Mobile WiMAX Base Station Vendor

NEC Corporation today announced its selection by UQ Communications Inc. (President: Takashi Tanaka, Head Office: Tokyo), a nationwide telecommunications carrier capitalizing on mobile WiMAX technologies, to supply mobile WiMAX base stations.
UQ Communications has chosen to adopt NEC's recently developed PasoWings BS202 mobile WiMAX base station, the world's first WiMAX base station equipped with UL-BF (*1) technologies, which are used to improve communications speed and increase base station coverage area by reducing radio frequency interference between base stations and data transmission terminals.

1. Equipped with UL-BF technologies that reduce radio frequency interference between base stations and data transmission terminals Adoption of ArrayComm LLC's (*2) multi-antenna signal processing (MAS) system enabled development of the world's first WiMAX base stations equipped with UL-BF technologies, which are used to reduce radio frequency interference between base stations and data transmission terminals. These newly developed base stations are accredited with increased transmission speeds, greater coverage area per base station and WiMAX networks that make more efficient use of radio waves.
2. Compatibility with multiple vendors via an open interface NEC dedicatedly worked to acquire WiMAX Forum's Wave 2 (2.5 GHz, 3.5 GHz) authentication and proactively undertook measures to secure international standardization. A wide variety of functions and an external interface based on international standards enables the system to be integrated with a broad range of vendors' equipment, which contributes to the smooth construction of WiMAX networks in shorter periods of time.
3. Compact integrated base stations These compact base stations were created using a 3D design, which enabled high density packaging and the use of a panel layout that provides effective heat dissipation and weighs 25 kilograms with a 25 liter volume. Moreover, the adoption of high efficiency amplifier enabled the integration of outdoor units (ODU), which send and receive transmissions, with indoor units (IDU), which convert signals and control access. Collectively, the costs for implementing and operating base stations have been significantly reduce by decreasing the space required to accommodate base stations, the time needed to construct them, and the resources needed for maintenance.
NEC has positioned itself as a total WiMAX system supplier through its development of data transmission terminals, wireless base stations and core network systems. NEC group companies, including NEC Access Technica, Ltd., which has been selected as a mobile device vendor by UQ Communications, are also participating in the field, in addition to mobile WiMAX systems that have been ordered by international partners in Taiwan and Thailand.
