WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- BroadbandCensus.com announced the launch of the monthly Broadband Breakfast Club with a forum on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

The breakfast forum, which is open to the public, will feature expert officials who have dealt extensively with various aspects of the landmark 1998 copyright law. Confirmed speakers include:

-- Mitch Glazier, Senior Vice President, Government Relations, Recording
Industry Association of America;
-- Michael Petricone, Senior Vice President, Government Affairs, Consumer
Electronics Association;

College of Law, and instigator of the "Chilling Effects" resource; and
-- Emery Simon, Counselor, Business Software Alliance.

The event, titled "10 Years Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act: Success or Failure?" will be held on Tuesday, October 14 at the Old Ebbitt Grill, 675 15th Street NW, Washington, DC.

Breakfast for registrants will be available beginning at 8:00 a.m., with the forum beginning at around 8:30 a.m. and concluding at 10 a.m. The charge for the event is $45.00, plus an Eventbrite registration fee. Seated attendance is limited to the first 45 individuals to register for the event, at http://broadbandbreakfast.eventbrite.com/.

Congress passed the DMCA on October 12, 1998, and it was signed by President Clinton on October 28, 1998. The law was designed to usher in a new phase of the United States' copyright laws, through an anti-circumvention provision designed to offer protection to copyright holders who encrypted their works, and through a service provider liability provision designed as a compromise between content owners and internet providers.

Ten years later, how well has the DMCA worked? This event, the kick-off event in the monthly Broadband Breakfast Club series hosted by BroadbandCensus.com, is designed to bring key stakeholders together to share perspectives on broadband technology and internet policy. Except for holidays, the Broadband Breakfast Club will meet on the second Tuesday of each month.

The topic of November's Broadband Breakfast Club is: "Should Government Funding Be Part of a National Broadband Plan?" That event will be held on Tuesday, November 18 (because of Veterans' Day the prior Tuesday), and will feature Kyle McSlarrow, CEO of the National Cable and Telecommunications Association, and John Windhausen, Jr., of Telepoly Consulting.
